Objectivity's object database is a leading database management system that eliminates O/R mapping for more efficient database solutions. Objectivity/DB is a high performing database engine superior to relational database management systems because it is a database software library linked to the application program rather than a separate data server process.

Objectivity is the market leader of high performance database management systems for sophisticated applications. A database management system or DBMS is defined as a set of software mechanisms that store definitions of the data types to be managed and an organized group of data entities in a controlled structural form. It is the sole access mechanism for storing, changing, retrieving, deleting and performing other operations on individual entities or sets of entities in the database. A DBMS typically handles all concurrent access, queries and recovery operations for the database it controls.

The amount of data in Objectivity/DB can be arbitrarily large, because it is not restricted by a program's virtual address space. Each client thread has a single logical view of a set of distributed databases. The client does not have to know where the data is physically located. Performance remains predictable as the number of clients and the volume of data increase.

Objectivity/DB is a distributed database management systems. Data can be distributed across any number of file server hosts. Data can be transparently replicated at different sites for fault-tolerance or to improve performance locally. It supports Linux, Microsoft Windows and all of the most popular Unix platforms. Data can be shared by processes running on different kinds of processors and even using different programming languages.

Key features in release 9 of Objectivity/DB includes high availability API extensions, a new database and container catalog, 64-Bit memory address support, a page conversion utility, and multiple page size support, which allows users to specify the storage page size for individual databases.
